Kirstin is a native of California. She has two BFA's...one in Art and another
in Classical Archaeology from San Francisco State University. (both tend to come in handy
in the mosaic industry!!!) Coming from a long line of tile smiths and setters, she
began learning the trade at an early age. Throughout the years her studies and hands-on
training have helped to develop her dynamic mosaic technique. Kirstin's artistic abilities
give the mosaics a uniqueness only a true artist can bring! She began working with the medium in 1993, when she built the dragon kitchen backsplash. Then, in 1998 she went on to make the star floor and the mermaid fountain piece. This large-scale installation work is the life-blood of her inspiration. But it wasn't until the year 2001 that the Mosaic Girls were born. Lori Watley, a good friend of Kirstin's, encouraged her to start their own mosaic business. The girls got off to a great start, and made some beautiful things. The bulk of the work on this site is the result of the joint combination of the two. Things happen, though and Kirstin is once again alone in her endeavours. Grateful for the head start ignited by Lori, slightly sad to work alone, but optimistic and ready for anything, she forges on! In addition to making her own mosaic art for the business and for herself, she teaches workshops to high school art classes in the San Diego area. She is also skilled in many other art mediums, including photography, painting and drawing, printmaking, beadwork, ceramics, stained glass, web and graphic design. Currently Kirstin is living in Coronado, California (that's in San Diego). She is an intern teaching advanced art students at Coronado High School and has a team of students working on a large-scale public mosaic. They hope for completion of the piece in June 2002. |
